Recently it’s come out that there were terms on the table for a peace agreement between Russia & Ukraine in April 2022, but with the US government’s incessant need for military intervention (along with their friends in the UK) and feeding the behemoth military industrial complex, instead of peace, we got war.
As a libertarian, I believe we should end all the wars, everywhere. I also believe we should dismantle all nuclear weapons. (The main reason being is that their use cannot be targeted to just the bad guys; innocent people all over would be impacted.) I’m proud to say I’ve been tweeting in support of a peaceful resolution between Ukraine and Russia since February of this year.
One argument I’ve heard is that the US needs to help Ukraine because Putin is a bully, so we have to get involved and help them stand up to him. If this is the case, why is the immediate reaction from our government that the only way to help Ukraine is by sending them billions of dollars and weapons? Why didn’t we instead help them come to a peace agreement? Likely all it would have taken was a reaffirmed promise that Ukraine wouldn’t be admitted to NATO.
Now lets get a little more controversial, shall we? I wholeheartedly believe that the US would be wise to leave NATO immediately. In fact, at this point, NATO should be disbanded. They have provoked Putin for years, and they play a big role in the blame over what’s happening in the Ukraine now. (This is a fact, and whether or not you think Putin is evil is not the point I’m making.)
For saying things like this, instead of being labeled as a sane, antiwar person, who doesn’t want to see our planet destroyed by a hot war, I’m labeled a Putin supporter. These attacks are quite similar to those the left likes to use to attack anyone that doesn’t agree with them: call them something horrible — like racist/fascist/Nazi — and they’ll learn to keep their dissenting mouths shut. “You’re a Putin sympathizer!” is the new “You’re a racist!”
But this isn’t about supporting either Russia or Ukraine, it’s about avoiding mass destruction of our world and unfathomable loss of life.
I ask you to consider what’s happening right now. We’re seeing inflation at levels never ever seen before. Our government is shipping BILLIONS of dollars and weapons to Ukraine. There’s even a chance NATO will admit Ukraine as a member, which means all NATO countries will be forced to come to their aid. Russia has nukes, and they will certainly use them if provocation continues. Wouldn’t it be a lot better for us to be trying for diplomacy right now? Shouldn’t we be trying to avoid nuclear war at all costs? The answer should be a resounding yes.
On that note, I highly recommend that you consider picking up a copy of Hotter Than the Sun by Scott Horton, one of our greatest antiwar voices.
As always, thanks for reading.
